These Beasts: Robyn Redish *Special 9 Part Space 15 Twenty Feature*

Robyn photo.jpg

This is a 9 part series in collaboration with Urban Outfitters' Space 15 Twenty. Our Origami Girls and Wavy Boys show will be up Feb 16-18, and we're doing free workshops from 11-4 on Saturday & Sunday. We will also be running collage features on their blog and social media.

We first discovered @stolenpainting on Instragram. Her playful take on domestic life offers a fantastical viewpoint that reveals everything is not always what it seems. For Robyn the world is a playground, to be recast as the setting of seemingly-ordinary affairs, which are actually quite fantastical when juxtaposed in scale to stand out from their surrounds. For Robyn the world is an object that responds to touch, and her intuitive motions reveal the playful nature of humans that decades of capitalism have covered in the patina of greed and psychosis.

1.) What’s your name?

My name is Robyn Redish.

2.) Where are you from?

I'm from Canada!

3.) Where do you live?

I've been living in Toronto my whole life, specifically the Junction, (coolest place on Earth).

4.) 3 reasons why your life in your city couldn’t happen anywhere else?

The only thing that comes to mind is a book store where I live. It's called Dencan Books, and I've been going there since I was a kid. I get all of my old magazines from there. This place, and the man who owns the store, Eddie, have helped shape me into the reader, artist, and collector that I am. I wonder what I would be like without this place?

5.) What kind of work do you do?

I have been doing analog collage work since I was in high school. Before that I did pastel work, watercolour painting, and drawing. I love playing with different scale and colour in my collages.

6.) What keeps you inspired?

Seeing other peoples artwork is always good inspiration, along with just looking through old books and magazines, it's a lot of fun to see how images can be changed.

7.) Where do you work?

It would be very easy for a blind person to find things in my workspace, it is both tidy and tiny. I work on a small table my dad made in the 90's, with all my tools close at hand. behind my desk is my bookshelf, where I keep my magazine collection.

8.) What is 1 challenge that has defined you for at least one chapter of your life?

I was the WORST in school. When I wasn't skipping class I was just miserable and bored. I had no direction or idea of what I wanted to do, and I ended up leaving school for a bit. When I decided to go back, I found a super cool alternative school that I ended up graduating from. I'm impressed with myself that I went back at all.

9.) What are some of your favorite snacks, and do you eat them while you work?

My favourite snack is coffee (is that really a snack?) and I can usually be found with it in hand.
